The hot rod community is full of remarkable models, but among them one model in particular stands out as one of the most popular and highly recognized cars, even among non hot rod enthusiasts. A timeless model, the 1932 Ford Model B not only brings classic styling to the forefront, it also represents an era like no other car can. Widely popular and done up in so many fashions in the hot rod community, we can’t help but love the classic Deuce Coupes, so when we came across this cherry model at the Goodguys RodFather Road Tour stop at Pinkee’s Rod Shop a couple months ago, we just couldn’t resist giving it some time in the spotlight.
Owned by 73-year-old Ed Koski of Fort Collins, Colorado, this Deuce is as pristine as they come. Decked to the nines with a Hot Red Meltdown paint scheme, hefty Chevy small-block and an interior as comfortable as your favorite easy chair, there’s nothing on this car that isn’t fully custom.
Koski’s love for hot rods started at a young age, like it did with many enthusiasts. “I started reading the little rod and custom magazine as a kid and had a custom Sportman Whizzer motorbike,” Koski told us, “I’ve been hooked ever since.”
In 1959, Koski started helping a few racers build their own hot rods, including a 1934 Ford sedan, a 1937 Ford coupe and a 1939 Chevy sedan. He also raced cars at tracks in Wyoming and Colorado at the time. Just a few years later, Koski acquired his first hot rod project car.
“Starting in 1961, I found a ‘29 Model A roadster in Berthoud, CO, paid $100 for the parts and started the dream build,” Koski said. “By the time it was running in 1964, it was in white primer, and had a 303ci Olds engine, bobbed rear fenders and a deuce shell, with seats out of an Austin Healy. The car never saw paint and was sold in 1981. Many more cars were built after that.” Among those cars were a ‘49 Olds, ‘72 Chevy pickup, ‘61 Ford Falcon pickup, and a full fendered ‘32 5-window coupe.
While Koski built several amazing vehicles, his love and pursuit for the ultimate 1932 Deuce Coupe continued. “In 2003, this sweet little Deuce Coupe came available that was cut into four pieces and Eric from Pinkee’s put it back together, as of which started the new build,” Koski told us. From there, the 7-year build took off, culminating into the cherry ride you see here.
In true hot rod style, Koski’s Deuce Coupe is chopped 3 inches, as well as features a filled roof, roadster quarters and the car’s original cowl vent. Performed by Pinkee’s Rod Shop and Koski himself, it’s no wonder this hot rod is as gorgeous as it is.
Sitting atop a 3-inch stretched frame in the front, under the coupe you’ll find custom frame horns, as well as custom front and rear spreader bars.
These frame modifications are complimented with a full custom suspension featuring a Super Bell 4-inch drop axle and mono-leaf reverse eye springs in the front and a Winters quick-change rear hung with a stainless 4-link system and QA1 coilovers. All this is backed by So Cal brakes and a Flaming River steering box featuring Borgeson stainless joints.
Adding to the performance of the car is the 1970 Chevy 350ci engine bored 30 over that’s predominately featured on the front of this Deuce Coupe. Equipped with a Big Mutha Thumpr camshaft, steal crank, Edelbrock 3-deuce intake manifold, MSD ignition, and aluminum heads from Gooding Performance, this gorgeously detailed engine has just enough bite to keep things interesting, although exact performance numbers are unknown at this time.
What Koski could tell us, however, is that the top speed of this hot rod is “too fast.”
Reining in the engine’s power is a Turbo 350 transmission from Advanced Transmission Center, complete with a stage one shift kit as well as a 2500 stall converter, matted to a Northern Colorado Driveline driveshaft.
Throwing plenty of power to the 15-inch front and 17-inch rear American Racing Hopster custom wheels, wrapped in Nankang and Michelin rubber respectively, this transmission makes riding in the Deuce a dream.
Inside the car, you’ll find nothing other than a completely custom tan leather and suede interior with a Glide seat, original dash set with Mooneyes gauges and a custom insert, as well as a hidden stereo system all done by Doug’s Auto Upholstery. With an alpine deck that can be tucked up under the dash and hidden speakers and amps, you can listen to all the oldies your heart desires while riding in a hot rod uncluttered by visible modern features.
We come in contact with some amazing hot rod enthusiasts and their amazing hot rod creations and while every one of them is different in their own right, we’ve never found a car that hasn’t failed to impress us in some way. Koski’s ‘32 Deuce certainly did and you can see why.
