Who doesn’t love a fun little crossover? No, we’re not talking about some blasé Nissan Rogue or Ford Edge, we’re talking about actually taking two separate yet awesome ideas and merging them together. That’s got to be what motivated the owner of this 1957 Bel Air to craft something that would get looked at and talked about wherever he went.
The car was recently noticed by Barn Finds and got the internet talking about its pros and cons, but all we can say is that it gives us a thrill no matter what angle we saw. And we couldn’t help but smile as we read the item description on its eBay auction listing (sorry folks, but it already sold for $4,000).
Underneath that weathered and beaten four-door body is a 1941 military weapons carriage–a Deuce and a Half, perhaps?–complete with four-wheel-drive that still works, believe it or not. It gets its power from classic 283ci V8 resting under the hood, which has been modified to displace 301 cubic inches.
The Bel Air has been kept in running condition since it sat parked for close to 22 years, but its restoration, done way back in the 1980s, has since gone to pot. A “heavy duty black tar-like” substance was applied to the undercarriage, interior metal structure, and external structure to prevent rust, which has since only claimed a portion of the deck lid where it meets the body, as well as some sections of the body itself.
We hope whoever now owns this beautiful Bowtie knows what he’s getting into, because it will certainly be a work-in-progress for the foreseeable future. But just imagine what this badass ride will look like when it’s all clean again–a hot rod and a 4×4, all in one! What’s not to like?
