Chapman’s ’33 Ford “Pretty Penny” is GG’s Most Beautiful Street Rod

DSC_3255_PR_1During the Goodguys 27th Annual Flowmaster West Coast Nationals, Harold and Tracy Chapman’s 1933 Ford Roadster aka “Pretty Penny” took home the award for Goodguys 2013 Flowmaster “America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod.”

IMG_4819This event which took place in Pleasanton, California is the largest gathering of rods and customs in the west.

The Chapman’s recent win has capped off what has been an amazing show season for the roadster. The Pretty Penny has been shown at all the nations biggest events this season. It recieved “Best Rod” at the Detroit AutoRama and was a top five finalist for major awards categories such as America’s Most Beautiful Roadster, Goodguys Street Rod d’Elegance, and Goodguys Street Rod of the Year.

The ’33 was a vehicle whose progress was stuck in limbo for some time. It bounced around unfinished between several high profile shops for about ten years until Harold Chapman got his hands on it. His in-house fab shop Customs & Hot Rods of Andice finished the project in time to debut it at January’s Grand National Roadster Show.

DSC_3170_PR_2This car has seen some heavy customization and features an impressive hardware setup throughout. The top of the car was moved back an inch and a half, over 100 parts and pieces were custom-machined in house to accommodate the project, and the underside is as impressive as the body featuring a boxed and dimpled frame.

Furthermore, the car features a one-off aluminum hairpin and dropped axle assiembly, full custom four-link rear with a Currie rearend, Wilwood rear discs and modified So-Cal Faux Brakes up front. The wheels are bronze-coated designed by Jimmy Smith and machined by Evod Industries.

The power plant consists of a Roush 427 Ford, TWN injection, and AFR heads. The transmission is a TKO-600 with a modified ’36 Ford shifter and one-off bezel.

Inside is simplistic and classy. The custom wrap-around dash was made two inches taller than stock and filled with a flipped Studebaker gauge cluster and custom internals by Classic Instruments. Jay Schuler, Chapman’s in-house trimmer created the bench seat and stitched the custom pleated leather.

Chapman is reportedly not the least bit afraid to test the limits of the car. After keeping it in pristine condition for show season we’re pretty sure he’s relieved to be able to take it out on the open road. He’ll be joining the Goodguys Street Rod of the Year and Ridler winning ’40 Ford on the 2,000 mile Goodguys Texas Road Tour which will run from Pleasanton, California to Forth Worth, Texas.

Aside from bragging rights, Chapman’s award winning car got him a custom toolbox from Snap-On and travel accomodations to the Goodguys 16th Southwest Nationals set for November 15-17 in Scottsdale, Arizona. This will be a special event because the “Champions Arena” will be on display which will feature the Goodguys Top 12 Cars of the Year.

Rod Authority congratulates the Chapman’s on a great show season and we wish you a successful trip during the road tour.Tracy_Harold_Chapman_medium_sized
