Custom ’37 Cord Coffin Nose Speedster Goes to Mecum Auction
Although Cord Automobiles were only built through six model years (1929-1932 & 1936-1937), they were noted both for innovation and style. The 1937 Cord Model 812 brought front wheel drive and hidden headlamps to the North American market for the first time.
Those features came too late to save the company, which had suffered through reliability issues the previous year. Regardless, many contend that the Cord models 810 and 812 are among the most beautiful domestic cars ever built.
Taking those classic lines and giving them a modern interpretation can be seen here to yield a breathtaking car. This custom Speedster body is wrapped around a Viper-based driveline, including the V-10 engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and SRT rear end.
All this is held together by a boxed construction, all-aluminum frame with fully custom suspension and Brembo brakes backing up the 22-inch Asanti wheels. The hand-laid fiberglass was finished to an incredibly high standard before finishing in Corvette Millennium Yellow and Ebony.
The two-tone leather interior is complimented by the custom wood-rimmed steering wheel, electronic hood and trunk latches and a touchscreen stereo and navigation unit. This Speedster is being offered for auction at the upcoming three day long Mecum Daytime Auction, August 18 – 20 in Monterey, CA.
Being held on the Del Monte Golf Course at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa, the event promises to be a unique experience. Additional details are available at the event web site.
