Walking the Alameda County Fairgrounds during Goodguys 22nd Summer Get-Together last May, we saw our fair share of beautiful cars and custom masterpieces. However, Darrell Benner’s 1961 Chevrolet Impala stopped us in our tracks for its shear perfection.
A local in attendance for the show, Benner resides in Fremont, California. He had much to tell us about his prized Impala, which has won an award at another Goodguys car show.
Built to be a road tour car, Benner’s Impala has a brand new pro touring suspension kit on both the front and rear. The Impala has rack and pinion steering for precise handling and driving performance.
Under the hood is a small-block 350 cubic-inch V8, mated with a Turbo-Hydramatic 350 automatic transmission. An electric brake booster helps the sizable 11-inch brake rotors stop on a dime.
A Moser 9-inch rearend keeps the Impala under control, which is tied to a custom made axle with a 3-inch driveshaft. With the frame being fully reinforced on the Impala, it holds good rigidity throughout the large coupe.
The candy red paint is just so inviting that it can’t be missed wherever this Impala goes. The paint also helps bring out the defined body lines and makes the polished stainless trim stand out even more.
Benner said the Impala will be getting a LS376 V8 engine and a GM 4L70E transmission next month. With the LS376 set to crank out upwards of 480 horsepower, this Impala is going to be fast off the line and on the straight, all the while looking beautiful simultaneously.
