Fabricators do what fabricators do… which is fabricate stuff. There is a segment of the industry that wants to ignore the bare bones type fabrication that happens in every garage, especially when these metal artists get bored. We happened to find a video of a bored fabricator finding a way to kill some time and still manage to create something useful and neat. A set of brass knuckles for a future gear shift handle.

What we love most about typical garage fabricators is that they love to use common stuff they have on hand in an uncommon way. For this video the common material is simply four large threaded nuts and a small piece of round stock. Granted, the functionality of the brass knuckles is probably not going to be practical for anything more that a ornamental piece.

Using them as a weapon would probably hurt the wearer as much as the intended target. We still wouldn’t want to get hit with them, but the project is best suited for a gear shift as the video’s fabricator explains.

Although he doesn’t go into great detail in selecting the material, we want to remind anyone that wants to take on this project to select material that can be weld to each other easily, and fits your purpose. If you plan on actually wearing these as knuckles, the nuts must be large enough for your fingers to fit into. We also recommend avoiding zinc covered nuts because of the welding fumes created by the zinc coating.

The project looks like a lot of fun, and certainly could be used in a future Rat Rod build. If nothing else, it is great welding practice or a fun first time project for someone learning how to weld.
