Like peanut butter and chocolate, fast classic cars and Southern California just seem to go together really well. The folks at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles know this, and want to celebrate another glorious summer by getting you and your kin off your duffs and heading up the PCH. It’s the Cruise-In & Road Trip event, set to take place on July 27th.
One important thing to note right away is that this event is only open to members of the Petersen Automotive Museum’s club, which is always open to applicants through its dedicated Membership And Support page. Even then, you are required to be a Checkered Flag 200 member, the premier group that donates a generous $1500 a year to the museum (of which a significant portion is tax-deductible).
If you consider that sum a tad too pricey, then we suggest you consider what you’re liable to miss out on at this event. The itinerary begins with a meet-and-greet at the Petersen at 8:00 a.m., with a Johnny Rocket’s breakfast provided to the first 150 visitors.
From there, the road trip begins to Oxnard, California, some 55 miles west of the City of Angels. Naturally, you and your ride will be taking the scenic route there: California Route 1, also known as PCH. Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, and the ever-lovely Malibu will be a few places worth stopping at on the way back.
Once in Oxnard, you’ll follow the convoy all the way to the Mullin Automotive Museum. It’s here that you’ll be able to take a tour of the West Coast repository of all things vintage, including the world’s largest private collection of Bugatti automobiles. A special exhibit, “The Art of Bugatti,” will showcase the classic, historical side of the 105-year-old luxury automaker.
