Some cars hit the scene with such force it is like a shot heard around the world. Wes and Vivian Rydell’s 1935 Chevrolet Standard Phaeton, named “Black Bow Tie”, is just one of those vehicles. Making its debut this last January at the Grand National Roadster Show, this incredible piece of art immediately dominated by taking home the coveted “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster” award.
Adding to the storm, the Rydell’s recently conquered again, this time securing the 2014 March Performance Street Rod d’Elegance award at last weekend’s Goodguys 14th Meguiar’s Del Mar Nationals.
Being one of just over 200 units made, this car started its life rare and just got pushed to the top by impeccable design and craftsmanship. Originally a Foose Design, this car was meticulously assembled and fabricated by Rad Rides by Troy. Minor accenting touches were added in throughout the entire vehicle, just slightly tweaking factory lines to subtly accentuate the existing beauty. The grille was pulled out at the bottom to add more classic roadster rake. The wheelbase was stretched by 3-inches while the sheetmetal was stretched 2-inches. The windshield was leaned back 2.5-inches to add the go-fast-while-standing-still look.
Nestled under the hood is a custom look-alike Rochester injection system sitting atop a 383 Chevy Ram Jet V8. Pulling suspension duty underneath are Heidts front and rear independent suspension systems. A clean luggage rack out back holds a paint matched and period correct metal box, just to add to the overall eye candy. Various pieces of nickel-plated trim are splattered through-out and the custom stitched red leather and black canvas top finish off the soft-goods.
The Black Bow Tie is a show stopper, no question. A big congrats to the Rydell’s and Rad Rides by Troy for such an amazing and unique car!
