Flaming River’s Chrome Spray Looks Great And Stays Looking Great

Flaming River Chrome Spray 05If you have a classic muscle or sports car – or have at least spent some decent time around the gearhead scene – then Flaming River is a name you should (and probably do) know. From steering racks and columns to u-joints and alternators, Flaming River has a diverse selection of high-grade classic car parts that not only fit and function great, but look damn good in the process.

One of the latest updates to their line of products is the addition of a new chrome spray finish – and not from a rattle can. We got in touch with Mike Close from Flaming River, and he was able to tell us a bit about the finish.

Chroming

Mike told us that Flaming River has a cutting-edge Garmat USA paint spray booth and specialized equipment for coating their parts. The parts are prepped, then a primer and a base coat of the chrome is applied and then finished with a clear-coat sealer.

As many a classic car owner can testify, chrome discolors when exposed to excessive heat. This process – known as “blueing” – can result in that spotty, uneven appearance on things like exhausts, headers, brake boosters, and so on. Flaming River’s chrome spray finish, however, does not distort with heat.FR40037 Chrome_0006 as Smart Object-1 PathMike explained that the finish is as strong as any automotive paint finish, and is completely rust and corrosion resistant. So things in close proximity to the engine, like rack and pinions or steering shafts, won’t be in danger of losing their finish.

But according to Mike, the only Flaming River’s products receiving the chrome spray treatment are currently the power rack and pinions and steering columns. But, he did mention that the company has experimented with a few “special projects” – including marine and motorcycle parts, a racing helmet, and even a golf cart. That blue chrome looks a little too good to not make it to production, so perhaps we can look forward to various colors of chrome spray in the future.Blue Chrome_0010-HDR
