In an effort to diffuse the knowledge that matters most here are five random hot rod slang terms that you either, have known all your life, or give a familiar nod to when your buddies rattle off jargon after a successful night of wrenching and downing more than a timid amount of liquid courage.
We have sourced the definitions of these terms from the layman enthusiast, which in our opinion are the best definitions! As a disclaimer, consider these as quotes from sourced enthusiasts and not your grandfather’s definitive tech description! For added conversation, shoot us your interpretations of the following terms and don’t hesitate to refute, acknowledge, or scoff at each.
1. Balonies: “Wide bad ass tires, usually on the rear.” Aside from the one and only lunch meet when you’re on a budget, “balonies” in this case refer to wide tread tires such as drag slicks. Not to be confused with “baloney skins,” which according to the profound sources at Urban Dictionary are, “Low-profile tires usually seen on tuner cars, or large rims. They give the illusion of ‘baloney skins’ due to their appearance of a thin-stretched out piece of rubber over a rim.” Yum.
2. Bobbed: “Shortened fenders, sometimes applied to a shortened hood.”
3. Boost: “Intake manifold pressure generated by a turbocharger, or supercharger.”
4. Boots: “Tires.” Not to be mistaken for the ones that were, “made for walking.” Get it? Yeah, we’re here all week.
5. Bullet Nose: “A Studebaker built in the late 40s and early 50s.”
