George Poteet’s ‘34 Ford “Hugger Orange” Takes Hot Rod Of The Year

HROTY-2_websizeGeorge Poteet has had a truly successful show season this year. For the second time in a row Poteet won a distinguished award from the folks at Goodguys Rod & Custom Association. Earlier this summer Poteet’s ’69 Torino was presented with the Goodguys 2013 Optima Batteries Street Machine of the Year Award in Columbus, OH. This time around, George’s “Hugger Orange” ’34 Ford was honored with the distinguished 2013 Tank’s Hot Rod of the Year award.

HROTY-3_websizeBetween the two wins Poteet took a trip out to the Bonneville Salt Flats in August for Speed Week and broke an SCTA record with his Poteet & Main Streamliner. He was clocked at a walloping 437.183 mph! A truly eventful year for this very special auto enthusiast.

According to the folks at Goodguys, the Tank’s Hot Rod of the Year award is unlike any of its others due to the demanding criteria required for contestants to bag the title. “The car’s agility, road worthiness, and performance is factored in as well as looks and build quality. All contestants must take a 100-mile drive around Indianapolis as well as blast down a drag strip (Muncie Dragway in this instance) doing a smoky burnout and racing to the 1/8th mile as fast as possible.”

Poteet’s ’34 started with a body from the folks at Steve’s Auto Restoration located in Oregon. At that time it was already chopped with reclined windshield posts and a filled insert. The undercarriage is just as streamlined as the car’s body. The chassis was handmade and features a Winter’s quickchange on a ladder bar and transverse leaf system in the rear. To improve the rake a 4” dropped front axle with JRI shocks was installed.

HROTY-7_websize“Hugger Orange” is powered by a ’65 Buick Nailhead which was built by Russell Martin featuring Ross pistons, Hillborn injection, and custom headers. It is outfitted with a Richmond transmission and a Hurst shifter.

The interior features slick black leather liner’s upholstered by Dave and Sally Schober. It was designed with a competition style in mind and with a NOS Covico steering wheel, as well as a beautiful collection of Greenline gauges. The dash was reworked to house the gauges. Also, a pair of ’65 Impala seats were narrowed and installed to give the car a classy yet performance minded styling.

Poteet’s car is a harmonious melding of style and performance and we congratulate him on winning Hot Rod of the Year. For his win, Poteet will be recieving a toolbox from Snap-On as well as travel accomodations to the Goodguys 16th Southwest Nationals which will be held on November 15-17 in Scottsdale, AZ. There, he will be joining the “Champion’s Arena” where his ’34 will be on display. This lot will be featuring Goodguys’ top 12 Cars of the Year.

The Top 5 finalists for the Goodguys 2013 Tank’s Hot Rod of the Year award included: Kirk Brown’s ’34 Ford, Larry Terpstra’s ’32 Ford, Scott Billish’s ’32 Plymouth, George Poteet’s ’34 Ford, and Lee Schmidt’s ’35 Ford Pickup. Congratulations to all the finalists and again to Poteet for the win and an event-packed season this year.HROTY-5_websize
