For those headed to Los Angeles, California for the Mecum auction this month, it would be well worth the effort to check out the preview of cars. One of the previews includes a ’32 Ford customized by Barry Lobeck. According to Mecum, this ’32 is one of the last of the Lobeck cars; therefore the highest bidder will own a piece of hot rod history.
What is a Lobeck car? It goes back in hot rod history to the 1970’s in the midwest. Lobeck grew up with a love for all things hot rod and eventually started building his own creations. Fortunately, he was born with a natural eye for design and created his style that was a blend of the time honored mixed with opulence.
According to the preview listing, this ’32 Ford was undergoing its transformation when Mr. Lobeck passed in 2011 and the project was completed by Richard Wood Kustoms. As evidenced by the stance and styling, it follow Lobeck’s vision for the project. The Impala Brown Metallic paint, although a modern BMW color, is a perfect choice for this style and era that it conveys. Contributing to Lobeck style are hood and deck louvers in the body modification department.
Based on the information available on the Mecum website, a 383 stroker provides plenty of power for cruising around. The engine dress package appears to feature a set of Edelbrock Elite Series II or original Elite Series I valve covers that were treated to a little custom color to coincide with the paint scheme.
Just as careful attention was paid to engine compartment, the interior was treated to equally luxurious customization. What appears to be a buttery soft brown leather covers the bench seat, door panels, and passenger compartment.
