This ‘64 Volkswagen van may not be quite what comes to mind when you think of a hot rod, but if you grew up in a VW household like I did, there is still a place in your heart for the iconic German brand. These classic Volkswagen vans are getting harder and harder to find these days, so when we found out from Autoholics that this one was up for sale on eBay, we had to look into it.

Known as the Type 2 (the Beetle was Type 1), the Volkswagen panel van was introduced in 1950 and came in many different forms, like a pickup truck, delivery van and bus. This particular model is of the DeLuxe variety, sporting 13 large windows throughout.

One of the most noticeable things about this van is its pop-up topper. This did not come on the van from the factory but was rather a Dormobile roof conversion. This pop-up roof acts as a camper of sorts, holding two sleeper bunks about roofline for convenience on long trips or camping adventures.

While driving, the camper conversion folds down like an accordion, making the roof as streamline as any other vehicle.

In addition to the roof conversion, this VW has seen a recent paint job as well as new upholstery, paneling and carpet in the interior. Matted to a manual transmission, the rear engine has been upgraded to a 1600cc Dual Port unit (a 1,493cc engine was standard) with a 009 distributor, similar to the 010 distributor for early hot rodders.

She may not be a hot rod, but she is definitely a beauty. Obviously more than one person thinks that besides us, as 31 bids have been placed on the van, raising the auction price up to almost $20,000.

If you’d like to get your hands on a nice classic VW van, now’s your chance. The van is being sold with no reserve and the auction ends on March 11th, so act fast for your chance at owning a beautiful example of a dying breed.
