Randy Marston’s ’35 Ford Coupe Is King At Goodguys Del Mar Nationals

With so many glistening hot rods and vintage cars on display at the 15th Annual Goodguys Del Mar Nationals in Del Mar, California, the judges could only pick one that would reign all. In the end, it was Randy Marston’s 1935 Ford Coupe that trumped the rest.

Another view of the trophy hot rod at Del Mar Nationals.

Marston, a hot rod enthusiast from Canada, aspired to rebuild his Ford Coupe, which only had 48,000 miles on the odometer. After much thought, Marston had one person who he felt could do a fantastic job; Roger Burman.

Roger Burman is one of the more renowned hot rod builders in the world, hailing from Lakeside Rods and Rides in Rockwell City, Iowa. Not to mention, he has mastered Ford coupes, building a few in the past that have won awards at previous Goodguys Del Mar Nationals car shows.

In addition, Burman has won the Ridler award at the Detroit Autorama, two Goodguys Street Rod d’Elegance crowns and one Goodguys America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod winner with 1935 Ford coupes for different clients located around the world.

With Burman’s impressive credentials, it was no wonder Marston’s 35 Ford Coupe took home the prestigious trophy. Handcrafted and custom fabricated, Marston’s 35 3-window coupe is doused in a luscious PPG blue and black paint that gives the rod grandeur.

Burman built Marston’s Ford coupe at Lakeside Rods and Rides, where he stretched the wheelbase, chopped the top, performed a full-length wedge section, and flowed the fenders by utilizing precise cuts of sheet metal.

As classy as the street rod is, the Ford coupe by Burman also gives off an angry and aggressive appearance with its low stance and offset wheel setup. Under the hood rests a 6.2-liter General Motors LS9 engine with a Tremec six-speed manual transmission and a 9-inch Ford rearend.

For stopping power, the Schott Velocity wheels are put to a stop by a sporty 6-piston Wilwood brake system. With power and aesthetic grace, Marston’s 35 Ford coupe is hot rod perfection.
