Almost everyone is well aware of automotive mastermind Chip Foose, but as it turns out Chip really is a chip off the old block. Sam Foose is the father of automotive customizer and TV personality Chip Foose. Back when the senior Foose was a young man he and Chuck Calvin tricked out a 1950 Ford Tudor sedan for Don Britton.
According to The Jalopy Journal Foose and Calvin received the ’50 Ford and started to customize the basically new car. The guys started out by sectioning the car to give it a unique stance thanks to the 4 inches removed from the body. With the lowered Tudor, Foose and Calvin desired a clean look free from the cluttered stock appearance.
In order to achieve their goal, the duo decided to shave the door handles and shortened the trim to attain simple yet understated look. Along with shaving, the grill was treated to a considerable amount of work and the headlights were frenched. With the recessed headlights the Ford was given a smooth look that was very desirable in height of the leadsled era.
By avoiding the desire to use wild wheel covers or even adding the characteristic pin striping that was trendy during this period, Foose made the ’50 Ford standout from the crowd. The understated enhancements allowed the elder Foose to raise the bar for what a custom ride should aspire to be for years to come.
