Thermo-Tec Introduces New Rogue Line of Basalt Heat Insulation

Heat shielding products are regular commodity in the automotive and racing industry, and there’s plenty of good reasons to utilize such measures in your vehicle, if the scenario warrants it. In various tests, exhaust wraps have been shown to reduce the outside operating temperatures of the cylinder heads, valve covers, and elsewhere on the engine by 10 to 20 percent, thereby creating more horsepower from a cooler-running engine. Of course, there are many other systems — electrical, fuel, and cooling — under the hood that you may also want to shield from high temperatures produced by the exhaust or a turbocharger, and that precisely where the products from Thermo-Tec come into play.

The problem with many heat wraps and heat shielding products, though, is that they dis-color over time (or very quickly, depending on the quality and material) as the material heats up and cures. The result is a dirty-looking set of headers, when your intent was to make them look nice by wrapping them in the first place.

Fortunately, there’s a modern alternative to the traditional glass fiber and carbon fiber weave material used for header wraps, turbocharger covers, and heat shields, and it comes from an unlikely source: a volcano.

Basalt, as it’s known, is a continuous filament made from volcanic rock, and while it’s-protecting properties are similar to those of carbon fiber, according to Thermo-Tec’s Nick Helms, the basalt weave holds its appearance over time, resulting in a much nicer look under the hood.

While basalt wraps have existed in its catalog for around three years, Thermo-Tec has simplified its basalt products, revealing its all-new Rogue Series of products, which includes T3 and T4 turbocharger covers and kits, 6-inch and 1-foot pipe shields, and 1-inch and 2-inch by 50-foot exhaust wraps. The Rogue Series includes the option of either a Carbon Fiber or Ricochet Black color (a copper/gold or black).

“These new Rogue Performance products are a great example of when appearance meets performance. These products can be placed on automobiles, ATV’s, motorcycles, etc. and give you the dependability you need, with the clean, updated look customers have been asking for,” says Helms. “Other wraps contain the heat, and once heat is applied to them, they will fade and change. Black for example, will often fade to a light grey color, but with this Ricochet Black, on your motorcycle exhaust pipe or on your turbos on your car, it’s going to stay that dark, black color.”

Our products are 100-percent universal, so they can be cut down to size, trimmed to fit and molded around anything you have in the vehicle. – Nick Helms, Thermo-Tec

“We have sent some turbo kits to people and been involved in some projects and they seem to be performing extremely well and they seem very happy with them.”

In addition to its new Rogue line, Thermo-Tec also markets a multitude of heat barrier products, including exhaust wraps/insulation, coatings and adhesives, sound and heat barriers,  heat shields, and sleeving.

“If we have a customer approach us with some type of sound or heat issue, we can steer them toward a product of ours,” Helms says. “Our products are 100-percent universal, so they can be cut down to size, trimmed to fit and molded around anything you have in the vehicle. Any type of heat or sound issue you’re going to have in your building process, we have a solution for it.”

The Rogue Series is fully U.S.-made, and Thermo-Tec is proudly supporting the Wounded Warrior Project with the new product line.
