“Where’s the next big hot rod movie?” Now THERE’S a question we’d all like to hear the answer to. Sure, there are a few that we can all remember–The California Kid, Two-Lane Blacktop, and American Graffiti all come to mind. But lately, Hollywood doesn’t seem all that interested in entertaining the masses with some good ol’ American steel, spitting out flames and sporting big slicks.
Here to give us all the fix we need is Konstantinos “Dino” Kovas, a Detroit resident and filmmaker. He and his merry band of Motor City misfits are currently working on a hot rod horror movie, ROAD KILL, and have turned to crowdsourcing site Indiegogo to help make the dream a reality.
Len Puch, a longtime friend of Kovas and owner of fabrication workshop SPEEDCULT, is eager about the project. “[Kovas and I] have always had a love for 50s-type stuff, hot rod stuff, and kind of that counterculture, rockabilly, psychobilly kind of stuff,” he says. “When Dino brought up the idea of doing a hot rod movie but keeping it weird and edgy, more of a Detroit grittiness to it, it excited me!”
Other production roles are being filled by visual effects designer Dan Quarnstrom and Dead Pretzel FX owner Patrick Halpin, both of whom will be taking care of the movie’s look and feel. Meanwhile, all the vehicles and their designs will be handled by hot rod specialist Shaggy LeBlanc. The man’s shop, Shaggy’s Raticals, will provide rides that fill the “weird and wild” category to a T.
Kovas explains that the plot will revolve around a “complex relationship between three people.” Put another way, it’s a love triangle that plays out in the fictional town of Hell, Michigan and involves parasites, zombies, fast cars, and what we can expect will be tons of gratuitous violence.
If you’re sitting in your chair and shouting “Sign me up!” at the screen, then by all means, check out the fundraising campaign. Kovas hopes to get $150,000 by May 7th, so pitch in what you can and get ready for one hell of a good time!
