You see it time and time again, hot rods just sitting dormant at car shows – but there has to be more to life than just sitting around, even for cars. So, in the spirit of doing away with parking in a lawn chair all day, New Zealand hot rodders take their rides to the Jalopy Dust Up, a beach-side dirt track event held every year. Check out some of the highlights from this year’s event in the video above.

Held at Waihi Beach, the Jalopy Dust Up pins vintage stock cars, midgets, traditional hot rods and pre-1965 classics against one another in a race the way a competition should be held- on a good ‘ole dirt track. Racers must pre-register for their spots to compete and the rest of the weekend is, well, just a big dust ball of fun.

In addition to vintage racing, the Jalopy Dust Up also offers live music, a car show, on site bar and vendors, as well as an after party Saturday night. This year, the event was held the weekend of February 5th and from the looks of it, there’s nothing we’d rather do in late winter than attend this awesome hot rod exhibition.

Not that we’re planning on being in New Zealand any time soon, but the Jalopy Dust Up is definitely on our automotive bucket list now. And after watching the video, who can blame us?
