Nothing says hot rod like a pair of fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror. Fuzzy dice have almost become overly cliche and a mandatory accoutrement for every tri-five Chevy still on the road today. As an automotive decoration, not much has changed in fuzzy dice since their introduction to the automotive world in the 1950s. That has all changed with Watson’s StreetWorks introduction of their latest safety inspired product called Fuzz Buds.
The history of fuzzy dice, like so many hot rod traditions, is traced back to American pilots in World War II. The pilots would hang dice with the one of the many combinations of seven pips showing for good luck. When the war was over and the pilots returned, the tradition continued when Mark Shepherd created the first fuzzy dice in 1952 for a friend.
Watson’s Fuzz Buds don’t rely on luck to bring safety to modern motorists. These dice are manufactured with a built in microphone and speakers, along with a mini-computer that allows for music playback, GPS navigation broadcasting, and hands free calling from your smart phone. Fuzz Buds are equipped with a rechargeable, long-play battery, with a USB charging cord included in the kit.
We were allowed to do some testing of the product a few weeks before its release to the public and found the product to be everything that we hoped a modern version of this classic favorite would be. Like the original fuzzy dice from the 1950s, Watson’s Fuzz Buds measure 3-inches by 3-inches. This may not seem like much, but to traditionalists like us, staying true to the origins of a product means a lot. Right away we got a good feeling about the product.
After charging the Fuzz Buds with the supplied USB charging cord, we effortlessly connected to the device by bluetooth from our laptop computer to do a distance test. Inside our office space, we were able to move the Fuzz Buds 25 yards away from the playback device before we picked up any signal breakup. A second distance test outside verified the same results.
We found the volume to be very satisfactory, testing the Fuzz Buds in a convertible at Southern California highway speeds. With the top down, the device provided enough volume to enjoy the music without disturbing other drivers or breaking local noise laws.
In a conventional hardtop, the volume is more than enough for even the most hearing challenged drivers. Playback volume on music mutes when an incoming call is received. The hands-free nature of this device allows drivers in states where hands-free devices are required when driving to make and receive calls on the road.
Fuzz Buds are equipped with three multifunction buttons that allow volume control and playback functions like playback list advance or return features. Phone volume can be controlled from the Fuzz Buds as well.
Our list of features and benefits of the Fuzz Buds:
- It’s cool. Traditional design right down to the old style cord connecting the two units.
- Built in theft device. Thieves are not likely to break your window for what they think is a set of fuzzy dice they can get at any Pep Boys store for five-bucks.
- The range is incredible. You could actually go on a picnic and leave your phone in the car and take these mobile Fuzz Buds with you to listen to music or receive phone calls up to 25 yards away.
- It’s mobile. The Fuzz Buds are perfect for drivers of company owned fleet vehicles that are not equipped with radios. The hands-free phone capabilities are also a major safety factor with company-owned vehicles.
- If your smart phone has GPS capabilities, Fuzz Buds can be used as a hands-free device to get directions from the phone’s GPS application.
Easy to set up, use and operate. Even for users with little to no bluetooth experience, the Fuzz Buds are simple to connect and use from mobile devices. - In case we didn’t mention it before, they are still cool.
Watson’s StreetWorks have already won two NSRA safety awards in back-to-back years and it would seem as if they are well on their way to a third safety award with Fuzz Buds.
