Hot Rodders Cruise Into Halloween In 3rd Annual Uptown Spooky Cruz

While most auto shows and cruise-in events showcase some of the most unique classic hot rods in a large arena or empty parking lot, one of the most unique car shows of the season offered a bit of a twist that has left cruisers and their fans coming back for more.

This year’s Halloween Spooky CRUZ in Uptown Lexington, North Carolina, was one of the best in its three-year history. Hosted by Lexington Hot Rod Junkies, this free car show offered thousands of area car lovers a chance to step into a time machine that transported each back to the days when some of the hottest cruisers would line the streets alongside mom and pop shops, but with an added creepy twist.

While not every classic hot rod in attendance featured a creepy costume, some of the coolest rides that we came across at this event went all-out to celebrate what the organizers called one of the best holidays of the year.

First Fiberglass Kit Car

Built in 1953 by Hellings Motor Company, this one of a kind hot rod was restored by Jeff McDaniel in 2011. Once powered by a rare flathead motor with a three-speed overdrive, this rare hot rod was cut down and restored with a powerful Jegs engine that is sure to leave Wanda Loo the scarecrow craving as many rides as she can get in her hubby’s rare but powerful ride.

The Ecto-1 is Back

While not everyone is a fan or may even be familiar with the 1980’s cult classic movie Ghostbusters, this Halloween movie geek couldn’t help but get excited to see the return of the Ecto-1. For those who are wondering if this was just one of the movie props that was set up for this event, you couldn’t be more wrong!

This refurbished 1974 Miller-Meteor Cadillac Hearse is owned by English-born electrician and prop builder Barrie J. Clark, who spent 1,000-plus hours rebuilding every mechanical piece of this famous hearse, including the engine, transmission, carburetor, electrical system, exhaust manifold and more.

As part of bringing this star car back to life, Clark’s Ecto-1 also includes the development of some very specific movie props like a full-size proton pack, P.K.E Meter and a full-size terror dog.

Trimmers Trim Shop Hot Rod Decorating Contest

This event also featured a Halloween decoration contest for those hot rodders who decided to go all out with their designated rides. Although this writer’s favorite Halloween hot rod didn’t quite make the cut, an extra special congratulations goes out to the winners, including:

  • First Place: 1960 Cadillac owned by Everette Maxwell Gordon
  • Second Place: 1956 Oldsmobile owned by Tim Everhart
  • Third Place: 1969 Corvette with casket trailer owned by Randy Hammitt
