Auction Watch – Weaver Customs 1931 Ford Coupe “Twisted Mistress”

Whether you like auctions or not, they’re a good barometer of what hot rods and kustoms are selling for. Our Auction Watch column here at Rod Authority features some of the coolest cars offered around the country, from some of the biggest and most recognized auction houses.

We have a thing for a hot rod that sits just right and we really dig this 1931 Ford Coupe dubbed “Twisted Mistress.” We saw it at SEMA  and and low and behold, now it can  be yours!

The rod was built by Weaver Customs out of West Jordan, Utah and is running a twin-turbo Ford V8. They employed many slight-of-hand body mods to it, (including obvious chop and a channel,) so it sits low and squat.

According to Barrett-Jackson, this coupe will cross the auction block in Scottsdale in January, 2019.

Lot #1290 – Built by Weaver Customs, the “Twisted Mistress” is a modern-day Model A. A twin-turbo 401ci V8 twin-turbo Windsor engine backed by a C6 automatic transmission with a 3,500 stall converter feeding a 9” Ford rear end sporting 3.70 gears. It features a custom-built chassis and suspension as well.

No panel was left untouched during the rotisserie build. It has been chopped, channeled, smoothed and shaved. Flush-fit doors complement the body modifications. It rides on 18” front and 20” rear Detroit Steel Artillery wheels wrapped in Toyo Proxe tires. The interior is trimmed in Hyde’s Italian leather.

In 2018 its accolades include being a feature vehicle on Hot Rod Magazine’s Power Tour, as well as an ISCA winner and a Street Rodder Top 100. The “Twisted Mistress” was displayed at SEMA 2018 by Prestone as well.

It would be easy to dismiss this as a spec build destined to make a big splash at a show like Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale. To many hot rodders, this type of big-buck build is the stuff of disgruntled nightmares and a symptom of a hobby that has morphed into something far, far away from a guy wrenching in his garage.

We agree to a point. The days of buying old drop tanks from the army surplus is long gone. In it’s place, we have an incredible cottage parts industry that offers killer, state-of-the-art components to flesh out any build you might have rolling around in your noggin.

Why not take advantage of all this artillery and make the best of it? Essentially, the rodding world has become “final assembly” of CAD/CAM components and sub assemblies. We all know the names, Art Morrison, Baer Brakes, Brizio and Brookville bodies.

If the argument is, “If I had a million dollars, I could build this car too.” Well, save up your shekels and order up your parts and put together your own hot rod, it’s never been easier.

Or head to Barrett-Jackson Scottsdake 2019 and bid away on this turn-key mega-build. Rod Authority will keep our eyes peeled and bring you more of the coolest builds crossing the auction block.  Stay tuned.
