SEMA 2015: 1959 Biscayne Sedan Delivery

There are certain things in this world that are considered to be an inarguable truth. America is a great country, baseball is her past time, and finally, were it not for this 1959 Chevrolet Biscayne sedan delivery, no automotive enthusiasts would be using Mother’s Polish on their prized possessions. It was slightly more than 40 years ago when Al Holloway, founder of Mothers Polish realized he needed a way to schlepp his wares to the various swap meets and boat shows that he utilized for sales. That’s where this very sedan comes into the picture.

Throughout those 40-or-so years, the sedan received upgrades that were relevant for the times. The car was around to witness the heyday of the ‘70s, and the bright colors and graphics that were popular in the ‘80s, and the ‘90s. But through the years, the Biscayne remained with the Holloway family. In the late ‘90s, the car was treated to a repaint, but for whatever reason, never reached the reassembled completion. It spent the next several years just sitting in a garage, waiting for someone to realize that it needed finished.

That someday came when Al’s son Jim convinced his mother the sedan deserved to once again be the face of Mothers Polish. As much as this car had become so much a part of the Holloway family, choosing someone the family felt could do the job correctly, was  an easy choice.

The nickel plating gives a nice golden sheen to the trim.

The name Troy Trepanier is synonymous with outstanding quality in the custom car world, and since he and the Holloway family have been friends for many years, the sedan delivery was toted to his shop in Manteno, Illinois. Troy tells us, “Before the project began, the key was to make the car reliable.” With that premise in mind, a complete Art Morrison chassis was slid under the unbelievably nice shell that Troy says was possibly the nicest ’59 sedan delivery body in the world. In fact, most of the paint on the car is the same paint that was applied in the ‘90s. The chassis uses AME’s tubular control arms, Strange adjustable coil-over shocks, Wilwood spindles, an adjustable anti-sway bar, and power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering.

Since reliability was the theme, sitting between the fender wells is a stock LS3 engine fed by a Magnuson supercharger. Troy says, “The engine is basically stock, and just received a simple blueprinting to ensure reliability.” Knowing that the big Biscayne would be subject to a lot of highway miles, a GM 4L80 transmission was bolted to the rear of the blown LS.

Installing a computer-controlled engine in a classic ride does require some electrical upgrades, so an engine management system from Big Stuff has been connected to the engine and transmission. What many don’t realize, is that this car can run on traditional fuels, or E85. It is a true, flex-fuel burning Biscayne. The computer is capable of determining the alcohol content, and adjusting fuel and ignition parameters as needed.

Not wanting the windowless hauler to blend in with other ’59 Biscaynes, a set of one-off, custom designed Billet Specialties wheels measuring 18 and 20 inches respectively, are wrapped Michelin tires.

If the trim looks different, that is because it is not actually chrome. All of the trim items are finished in a nickel finish that gives it a different luster, but fits the car well. If you plan to cover a lot of miles in a car, you better have a comfortable interior. The original seat frame was removed from the car, and the guys in Troy’s shop stitched up a gorgeous custom leather interior, added a set of new gauges from Classic Industries, and finally, a Vintage Air A/C unit.

The car was completed in time for Troy’s mother, and Mrs. Holloway to experience the Power Tour in 2015. Troy and the Holloway family are happy to announce the car performed flawlessly, and made the trek without a hitch. We would say that not only is the car a showstopper, but the reliability goal has definitely been met.
