30-Plus Images Full Of Coolness From The GM Photo Store

Sometimes there are stories that are hard to complete. Not because the story isn’t a great one, but choosing the BEST images is tough because there are too many great ones! Such is the issue with this article. I set out to pick some of the coolest images from the GM Photo Store’s Facebook page, but after walking out of there with a basketful of incredible views into the history of GM, choosing the best ones is a lot like deciding which of your children is deserving of the oxygen mask. Well, maybe not THAT bad, you may have a favorite child.

Speaking of kids. GM didn't forget the little ones as it was marketing to both young and old. You'd be the coolest kid on the block with one of these! All images courtesy of GM Photo Store.

The GM Photo Store is just that, a place where you can purchase historic GM images. More than just a repository for vintage photos, the GM Photo Store offers historic marketing literature and some of the coolest branding for GM vehicles found in the company’s expansive archives. Really love those banners you see all over Detroit during the Woodward Dream Cruise? You can get your own personal version on as a metal sign! Want to show your GM loyalty in the man cave? Nothing shows you’re connected to the General like some vintage imagery fresh from the GM Design Studio!

Everything from Larry Shinoda's early sketches of the CERV-I to many ideas in the prototype stage are available through the GM Photo Store.

Rather than sit here and blather about all the cool stuff sitting in the GM Photo Store’s vast portfolio, I’d prefer to whet your appetite with a sampling of some of the coolest images that YOU can order through the store’s web page.

For Your Viewing Pleasure!

GM used numerous ways to highlight what was new within its cars. Everything from lifting bodies to swiss-cheese autos showed the goods. Pontiac even used transparent body panels to go under the surface for the 1939 World's Fair.

Throughout history, various GM plants have kept the doors open by building automotive products as well as other items needed for a specific time. Everything from the recent production of ventilators to tanks and aircraft for a more typical war effort have been produced in GM plants.

Production vehicles, aircraft, and even locomotives have kept GM employees, and the economy, going throughout the decades.

Damsels Of Design

And, of course, the car-buying market has changed alot throughout the decades, and GM sought to capitalize on the influence of women on car purchasing. GM hosted a team called the “Damsels of Design” under the guidance of Harley Earl in the ’50s, and kept with marketing to women throughout the decade. Many of images at the GM Photo Store highlight their contributions, as well as their marketing.

In today's society where we can't even sit in a moving car safely without a seat belt, how would a rotating seat fit in today? How's your driving on Gran Tourismo using a joystick? Want one in your car?

We could go on and on about all the production photos, rare prototypes, production outside of autos, and even marketing content that was deemed too far out to use (even in the ’60s). You can see how choosing “the best” images to highlight such a vast collection can be pretty difficult.
