All Out Custom: Always-Driven, Old Skool Custom 1953 Buick

This Buick is about as cool as it gets. The custom look of this car was achieved using all old car parts and this thing was built to drive. The owner, Alan Donald of Kent, Washington, has had the car 15-years and he’s got 60,000 miles on it as it is. You can’t deny the retro style of this build, and looking at it makes you feel like you’re back in the late ’60s looking through the pages of an old Rod and Custom magazine, finding this beauty right on a centerfold page!

The level of detail put into this build is almost hard to fathom. There are so many little details all throughout that make it what it is. We love this thing!

There’s just something about the look of a slammed, early ’50s Buick. This car gets it right and the color and texture compliment the look completely. We really love the way this beauty was put together and the quality of the build and its custom aspects speak volumes to the creativity of the owner.

“It was a stock original driver when I got it,” Alan said. “It had the stock straight-8 and original suspension. It’s still an ongoing project and it took ten years to get it to look like this.” Now, the improved drivetrain is made-up of a stock small-block 350 cubic-inch engine that puts out modest power, a 700-R4 automatic transmission, a S10 Chevy front clip, and a Chevy S10 rearend. “It’s just a cruiser,” Alan said.

The look of the interior continues with the style and even goes on to complete it. The white upholstery doing a great job matching up with the exterior.

The interior also stands out from rest with a custom console that Alan made. It flows front to back and goes up the rear bench seat creating a bucket seat look. It’s got a clear coated, crushed and scarred bare metal look that perfectly matches that of the front bumpers. The rough cut scars under the glossy clear create an interesting contrast that really lend themselves well to each other. The center console is a unique custom touch, one that really attracted us to this car.

The finish on the console matches the finish on the dash for a well rounded look.

There really is very little of the original look that has remained and every panel has been touched in some way, It has ’55 Pontiac front and rear bumpers, ’53 Hudson taillights, and the peaks on the front fenders and rear quarters was custom done. The grill is from a ’52 Kaiser and the door handles are off of a ’41 Lincoln.

The paint on the car is a Subaru WRX blue with a matte clear over it. All of the pinstriping was done by John Byers.

“All of the parts on the car are old car parts,” Alan explained. “I wanted the look of the car to be vintage.” Alan definitely met his goal as the car looks like it could very well be an original, late ‘60s classic hot rod build like those put together by the greats of custom in the early days of hot rods. “It’s been a fun project, and it’s got 60,000 miles on it like this,” Alan said.

The build also includes Vintage Air A/C for comfort.
