People are extremely creative, especially when it comes to the automotive market. Be it custom cars or innovative new parts, us gearheads don’t have to look far to find new and unique ideas. But gearhead ingenuity doesn’t just apply to normal-scale vehicles, it also applies to the toys we played with as children; in this case, a 1970s Tonka Truck.
While you’ve probably seen a few modern takes on the Tonka Truck, or maybe that’s just a Colorado thing with a done-up F650 with Tonka logos on it hitting the floor at practically every car show, the Tonka Truck we found in this video on Chromejuwelen is a bit different. As it turns out, the ‘70s style Tonka Winnebago Indian motorhome camper toy was actually turned into a functional skateboard at the hands of Humphrey Industries founder Ryan Humphrey. Check it out in the video above.
You don’t have to be a skater to see just how neat this board is. In fact, most teenage skaters would look at this with a quizzical look, but from a custom car building standpoint, this is right in line with the industry. Not only is the Tonka skateboard a completely new idea, it also took some serious know-how to create. You can’t just slap a piece of board on an old toy and expect it rule the skate park, but this extremely cool contraption does just that.
Fitted with some heavy-duty off-road skate wheels, axles, and custom deck, the Tonka Truck is able to maneuver just like any other skateboard, although according to Humphrey, it feels more like a skate with a cement block attached to it. Cooler than the fact that this child’s play thing is now a working skateboard, however, is the fact that the toy’s original accessories seem to still be in place, right down to the steering wheel and swiveling seats.
Old toy collectors would probably have a fit if they saw this video, but you won’t find many purists around the hot rod scene. I mean, how much of a hot rod would you really have without chopping, customizing or modernizing something? That’s what makes the hot rod sect of the automotive world the most unique of the bunch- we know what we want and that’s individuality.
In that respect, our cars have a lot in common with this Tonka Truck skateboard. It may not be anyone’s idea of a hot rod, but it sure shows that innovative minds are still out there and willing to go the extra step for something outrageously cool.
