Imagine a life full of hot rods, pinup girls and skateboarding. No, we’re not talking about what goes on in your cul-de-sac on a Friday night, we’re talking about the premise behind this year’s Transworld Skateboarding Magazine “Skate & Create” winning production. While it’s rather creative and showcases some pretty sweet rides as well as skateboarding tricks, this video is not for the faint of heart. We’ll just say that most hot rod and classic car owners wouldn’t want this team of skateboarders any where near their pristine rides. Check out the unique mash-up of skateboarding and hot rod culture in the video we found on YouTube above.
Skate & Create is an annual competition of sorts in which four hand-picked teams of skateboarders have ten days to create a unique video showcasing their talents. Each team is given a truck full of building materials and tools, and two professional builders travel with each team helping them create skateboarding obstacles, props, ramps, etc.
The video produced and consequent photos that are shot over the ten days are then judged by the folks at Transworld Skateboarding Magazine on creativity, use of obstacles, location and skating talent. The winning team gets a place on the cover of the magazine as well as a place in the following year’s competition.
This year, a team by the name of Creature took the competition in a whole new direction. With the use of classic cars and built hot rods, the team created an alternative life in the fast lane. Hot rods became obstacles to jump over and means of accelerating on flat roads when foot power just wasn’t enough , while at least one unfortunate classic turned into a skateboard ramp and the gutted cab of a classic hot rod became the perfect obstacle at the top of a ramp.
While there is some definite abuse of cars in this video, including a spiked bat going into the hood of one, the video is very artistic and brings a new idea to the traditional skateboarding persona. Not that we know anyone who’d appreciate their car being turned into a ramp or guys with axes skateboarding around their cars, but still, the video is pretty neat.
The full-length winning video from this year’s Skate & Create competition can be viewed on the Transworld Skateboarding website, as the above video is only the first half. Although the second half doesn’t deal with hot rods and classic cars, the tricks the Creature team was able to pull off with a standard pool table are pretty impressive. The bloopers at the end of the full-length feature and the gallery of photos taken by Mike O’Meally during filming are also worth taking a look at.
