Video: Death At The Hands Of A ’57 Chevy

The old saying goes, “If looks could kill,” but what about horsepower? We all know that even our favorite hobby can become a deadly obsession, either in the form of a shady car buying deal or else in the midst of a ruthless driving session. But in the case of “New Deal Used Cars” lot owner, Luke Fuchs, it’s a little bit of both.

Fuchs, played by actor Jack Warren, is one of the main characters in the 1980 film, “Used Cars.” Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the plot follows the antics of a “hot shot salesman,” who must keep a used car lot from being taken-over by a malicious, rival lot owner and competitor from across town.

In this classic scene from “Used Cars,” Luke Fuchs is abducted in his very own, ’57 Chevy by demolition derby driver and henchman, “Mickey.” Mickey, who is played by Michael Talbott, happens to work as a dark henchman for Fuchs’ evil competitor and brother, Roy L. Fuchs.

The part of Roy L. is also played by Jack Warren, and Talbott’s character finishes off the unsuspecting Luke Fuchs by ramming the ’57 Chevy as hard as he can, plunging the two door sedan into traffic and finally flipping it over back into the “New Deal” used car lot.

What’s more, the beautiful but subtle ’57 takes more of a beating than do Talbott and Warren, though it’s Warren’s “engine” problems that become the real catastrophe of this classic movie scene.

It could be the most awesome driving scene of a classic or a sad and complete waste of a perfectly good, two-door ’57 Chevy; which one is up to you. There are just a few key points that come to mind, however, while watching this epic scene from “Used Cars.” First, you mean to tell me that there was a time when you could actually buy a relatively straight, ’57 Chevy with a rebuilt motor for $2400! Second, is “Mickey” for real when he complains to Fuchs about the $2400 price tag?!

Was the world a different place in 1980? Well…if $2400 for a ’57 Chevy makes you fall off of your chair like it does me, then that obviously means that some of us just can’t remember the ’80s as well as we thought!
